He routinely told his elders that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He did not allow the detrimental feedback from others kill his dream of becoming one of the greatest poker players on the planet.
He started competing seriously after getting a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He honed his techniques at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The beginning number of years for Phil were a learning opportunity and coming away with a win wasn’t a regular thing at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he made 2 final tables and came away with his first WSOP bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the last table he destroyed a number of the well known pros including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil made a decision to take his game to the successive level and moved out west to Sin City. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Ivey credits his achievements to dedication and a continuing passion for poker. He states that he is learning every single day and is very humble about his success.
